RKid is proud to bring you our contribution towards a protective gear solution for the COVID – 19 pandemic: a powered, air-purifying respirator – (PAPR).
Our design is aimed at the “maker community” -individuals and communities with a focus on making something tangible in tech – as a DIY-friendly solution to be deployed in hospitals and care units to protect vulnerable medical personnel.

To design a reusable face mask that can be produced locally in a decentralised way.
Local makers communities must be able to construct the design with standard materials, using digital manufacturing technology. The unit will consist of a face mask (washable and ajustable for different head sizes) and an air supply (powered by a 12V battery bank with a DC motor).
designed and prototyped a number of test units be able to reach the best performing and easiast-to-make design.
Desperate times call for innovative measures… and practical thinking!
We started off by conceptualizing the design around the ablilties that local makers communities have, materials available to them, as well as other stuff that one has access to during a lock-down scenario. The aim was to design a mask and pump that could be made locally and in record time.
A number of design aspects were developed and crudely tested in a short perios of time. (Our studio and workshop have never been in such a mess after this week of innovation and problem solving!)
RKid is fortunate to have a proper workshop and many tools that makers also will have available. Parts were designed around digital manufacturing as a first available option.

The solution is an easy to build Mask and Pump.
The Mask is constructed from:
The Pump is constructed from:
The two assemblies are then linked with a standard hospital air line pipes, pool- or vacuum cleaner pipe.
The pump is drivven by a 12V DC motor (Speed: 640rpm, Stall Torque: 0.64 kg-cm, Stall Current: 770mA, Current: 38mA) an can delivers 80L/M through two P2 filter into the mask.
Battery pack is made up from 18650 Battries (3 off), housed in a 3bay battery holder
Rocker switch, 3A, 15x1omm type for the on/off
